In August and September 2019, I hiked nearly 300 miles of the newly designated “pilot trail” of the Great Plains Trail, a nascent long-distance trail that goes from Texas to North Dakota, crossing New Mexico, the Oklahoma Panhandle, Colorado, the Nebraska Panhandle, South Dakota and North Dakota.
